FENG SHUI
Feng
Shui Your Way Into a Healthy Home
By
Shelley Mengo, CFSC
Feng Shui
(wind and water) is an ancient art that has been around
for over 6000 years. It offers us a way to live in
harmony with nature while creating an empowering
environment. Many of us are also hearing the term
"green" design. The criteria for
"green" design, utilizing nontoxic and
sustainable produced materials are very similar to many
Feng Shui principles. The goal for both is to create
environments that are healthy for the planet and human
occupancy.
In our current world of increasing pollution and our
technological advancement, we can readily point to
harmful environmental factors, which increase the stress
levels in our bodies. One of the great ironies of the
twentieth century is that the very technologies intended
to enhance our well-being have often undermined our
health:
Unfortunately we cannot control what goes on outside of
our dwelling but we can control what goes on within our
homes and surrounding property. Whether you are starting
construction on a new home, remodeling your current one,
or simply house cleaning, try selecting natural and
environmentally safe products. Some things just can't be
eliminated, but you can still protect yourself by
removing as many materials that emit toxic fumes.
Materials: Glass, wood, stone, ceramic, and brick
are all natural elements and are the best choice of
materials for our health as well as the environment.
Today many homes are built and furnished with building
products, including vinyl, that are harmful to many
people. The largest use of PVC is in building materials
such as cables, window frames, doors, walls, panelling,
and wastewater pipes. Not to mention, it is also used in
home products - such as PVC flooring, PVC wallpaper,
window blinds and shower curtains.
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a resin and when heated
produces toxic fumes. Doctors say it can cause
respiratory problems and cancer in humans. Of all the
plastics, PVC plastic or vinyl is the most
environmentally damaging but continues to grow in use
worldwide.
|
Ventilation:
Controlled filtered ventilation will help
to insure the air we bring in is clean and
healthy. Inadequate ventilation can cause
serious health problems. Breathing in
stale air and pollutants from such things
as your heating ducts, fireplaces,
carpets, plastics, and furnaces, can cause
symptoms such as headaches, nausea,
allergies and more serious health
conditions. Opening windows whenever
possible is important for good air
quality. Unfortunately, we can't always
keep our windows open especially in the
winter or summer months so adding fresh
flowers in rooms will increase oxygen up
to 200%. Adding salt candles and lamps or
placing bowls of sea salt (valuable
cleansing properties) on windowsills, or
floors will also increase the ph level in
the rooms and help cleanse the air of
pollutants that are airborne.
Plants: In Feng Shui, trees and
plants are used to add stability, aborb
toxins and bring healthy chi/energy to our
environment. They not only add beauty to a
space they are also an inexpensive method
of cleansing the air in your home of toxic
gases emitted from office equipment, such
as computers, copiers and fax machines.
The more healthy and vigorous the plant,
the better it is at getting rid of harmful
pollutants.
A
NASA study found that common houseplants
were able to remove up to 87 % of air
toxins in 24 hours.
Other reasons why plants/trees are
important to us:
 |
Plants
emit oxygen we need to breathe while
absorbing carbon dioxide we exhale |
 |
Green
plants reduce headaches, dry
throats, dry or itchy skin, fatigue,
and other cold-related symptoms by
more than 30%, partially by
increasing humidity levels and
decreasing dust. |
 |
Plants
absorb VOCs (Volatile Organic
Chemicals) often linked to Sick
Building Syndrome. Adhesives, many
paints, carpets, synthetic building
materials and all those products we
use for personal hygiene like
deodorants, perfumes, hairspray etc. |
 |
Plants
absorb noise pollution. It can help
us focus better. |
 |
They
shade us from the harmful rays of
the sun. |
 |
Best
of all, plants are very calming thus
reducing stress. |
Air Purifying Plants:
 |
Dragon
Tree |
 |
English
Ivy |
 |
Philodendrons |
 |
Spider
plants |
 |
Peace
Lilies |
 |
Ferns |
 |
Chrysanthemums |
 |
Palms
including Bamboo |
Everyone
can learn to connect with his or her
environment. It is time for us to do so.
Feng Shui creates awareness in us.
Have fun and make it a way of life. Link
yourself to your environment and become
aware of the rhythms of nature.
